The life of an elderly but still successful theater actor, Gilbert Valence, is turned upside down when his wife, daughter, and son-in-law are killed in an automobile accident. He suddenly finds himself the guardian of his orphaned grandson. Valence still enjoys his favorite café and leisurely walks around Paris and even takes on a new role as Prospero in The Tempest. But when confronted with an offer to appear in an American film adaptation of James Joyce’s Ulysses, he realizes the limits brought on by age and new responsibilities. Another masterpiece by Portugal’s amazing director who is still busy making films at the age of 101 in 2010. Winner of various international awards.
