The 10th Annual Maryland Film Festival kicks off tonight in Baltimore. The festival (at which I had a blast in 2004) always does an excellent job of including local favorites in the event (John Waters, Barry Levinson, crab cakes) and of showcasing some of the best American independent films out on the festival circuit. It just so happens that this year, many of those films were made by folks connected to AFS in one way or another:
- David & Nathan Zellner's GOLIATH continues its national roll-out post-Sundance. The missing-cat/crumbling-man dark comedy screened as a Narrative-in-Progress at AFS late last year.
- A Doc-in-Progress alum, David Redmon & Ashley Sabin's INTIMIDAD, continues its post-SXSW festival tour.
- The Duplass Bros' BAGHEAD (produced by 2008 TFPF recipient John Bryant) screens at Maryland, leading up to its national release from Sony Pictures Classics this summer. The official trailer is up on Myspace now . This is not the official Baghead trailer. I don't know what the hell that is.
- Yet another Narratives-in-Progress & SXSW alum, Alex Karpovsky's WOODPECKER, screens at Maryland.
- Any finally, a pair of shorts by TFPF recipients are playing in separate shorts blocks - Toddy Burton's THE AVIATRIX and David Lowery's A CATALOG OF ANTICIPATIONS.
Have fun in Bal'more, y'all!
