Description
The AUSTIN CINEMATHEQUE presents the film that laid the roadmap for the French New Wave, Jean Pierre Melville’s 50s gangster noir, BOB LE FLAMBEUR (“Bob the Gambler”) in glorious black-and-white 35mm.
Melding the toughness of American gangster films with Parisian savoire faire, BOB tells the story of an aging gambler who navigates the treacherous world of pimps, moneymen, and naïve associates while plotting one last score—the heist of the Deauville casino. This neon-streaked cinematic underworld possesses all the formal beauty, finesse and treacherous allure of green baize and was the inspiration behind the early, free-wheeling gangster films at the heart of the nouvelle vague.
All AUSTIN CINEMATHEQUE screenings are free and open to the public. One-night-only. Come one, come all.
