The AFS Internship and Film Referral Program is comprised of three phases. Our goals are to educate participants about the film and arts industries and facilitate job placement in the field. The first phase is an Office Internship, followed by an Apprenticeship, and finally the Film Referral Program. The Internship and Apprenticeship phase each lasts four months and takes place at Austin Studios. The Film Referral phase is ongoing.
Internship Program
Each fall, spring and summer semester, we bring on a new class on ten interns. The internship provides skills, experience and the elusive foot-in-the-door to the film community. Participants learn the essentials of nonprofit arts administration and the inner workings of the film industry. Interns master basic office skills, workplace etiquette and event management. They participate in a minimum of three professional development workshops during the semester and create a personal video project. Interns receive informal feedback throughout their tenure as well as a formal evaluation at the mid-point of the semester. Interns contribute an average of 15 hours per week to the internship. This includes two office shifts, one Film Club shift, and various AFS events throughout the week. This is an unpaid internship. Please note that this is not a production internship.
Apprenticeship Program
After completing the internship semester, interns can apply to become apprentices to one of our departments. Apprentices take on professional responsibilities that align with a dedicated AFS department: Community Education; Artist Services; Programming; Austin Studios; Marketing; Development and the Texas Film Hall of Fame. Apprentices cultivate their interests and gain valuable contacts in the film-related field of their choice. Apprentices manage the new class of interns. Apprentices receive a monthly stipend. Only alumni of the internship program are eligible to apply for apprenticeships.
Film Referral Program
Interns who successfully complete a semester at AFS are eligible for our Film Referral Program (FRP), through which we help place our intern alumni in jobs. To date, we've facilitated over 500 FRP placements in part and full-time positions. Participants are placed on a “referral list” in our database and are recommended to production companies when positions become available. Participants roll out of the program once they secure a full-time job or establish a dependable network of professional contacts. Only alumni of the internship program are eligible for participation in the Film Referral Program.
