The Film Mind: Advanced Cinematography and Directing Recurring event
Taught By Filmmaker Steve Mims

Tue, 1 May, 2012 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

The Film Mind:  Advanced Cinematography and Directing blends an in-depth examination of current large sensor digital cinematography with classic filmmaking techniques, both technical and aesthetic. The core tools of cinematography:  lenses, filters, exposure and lighting are melded with the discipline of classic film grammar and directorial technique to prepare completely to make accomplished films.

The Great Directors. Threaded through the course are the concepts and ideas of three great directors of the last century: David Lean, Alfred Hitchcock and Akira Kurosawa.

All three were primarily visual storytellers who shared much in common. Their work and ideas inform many of the concepts reviewed in class and students will be required to

view films outside of class and do assigned readings in addition to technical reading and assignments directly related to the work of the course.

The course focuses on three phases:

  1. Preparation:  idea, script, visual narrative approach, design and story boarding.
  2. Shooting: directing, blocking, lighting and cinematography.
  3. Editing:  progressive cuts, image color correction and timing, mixing and finishing.

Projects:  Each student will create an individual one-minute film and collaborate on a seven minute short made by groups of five.

Requirements: Students must have access to a camera and editing for the one-minute film.  Camera, sound, lighting and grip equipment will be provided for the group film.

The course objective is to produce excellent work and provide a framework for the student to move forward creatively.
