-----------------------------------

"Clockwatchers is a film made by and about women. That fact alone is enough to qualify it as outsider cinema. Anyone who closely examines the issue can conclude that film has had a historically male bias. Many films can be distilled into the following template: A male writer tells a story about a male character that is subsequently brought to life by a male director. This machismo mentality isn't exclusive to Hollywood films; independent films are rife with works that fail to include well-rounded female characters, if at all. The popular metric by which one can gauge female involvement in a film is the Bechdel test which posits that in order for a film to have a minimum female presence it must: a) have at least two (named) women who b) talk to one another c) about something other than man. The vast majority of films fail this test.

Anchored by superb performances by Toni Collette and Parker Posey, Clockwatchers manages, in the context of filmmaking, to do something revolutionary by telling the story of four real women. None of the four leads (rounded out by Alanna Ubach and Lisa Kudrow) fits in to film's traditional and fetishistic female archetypes. There are no virgins or vixens. In addition, none of the leads are the spiteful and irrational girlfriend/wife/mother whom our hero must confront and overcome. Instead, Jill and Karen Sprecher choose to tell us a story of four women with complex emotions, motivations, and goals. The fact that "Clockwatchers" can be quantified as outsider art because of it's unique portrayal of female relationships is nothing short of a shame." (Noah)
