USA, 1982, 35mm, 132 min
In a 1934 Paris replicated in classic Hollywood musical style, nightclub entertainer Victoria Grant (Julie Andrews) finds herself without a job or prospects. On a miserable rainy night she is taken in by gay, unlucky-in-love pianist Toddy (Robert Preston), who, after Victoria changes into his dry clothes, comes up with a sensational idea. He passes off Victoria Grant as Count Victor Grasinski, the greatest female impersonator in the world. She/he/she becomes the toast of Paris, and, for visiting Chicago gangster King Donovan (James Garner), who falls in love with her, the source of a tumult of confusing feelings. Perhaps the last of the true, great Hollywood musical comedies, VICTOR/VICTORIA is a career high point for Andrews, Edwards, Preston, Garner and composer Henry Mancini.
