To celebrate the twin death-rattles of 16mm film and "the most pioneering film festival in the country," Cinematexas and the Austin Film Society will present FROWNLAND, one of the last of a breed of avant-gutter indies, as the final event of the Cinematexas Viking Funeral.

In an alternate universe, FROWNLAND might be Lodge Kerrigan’s NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE. In this universe, it’s a comedy of frayed nerves and fear-inducing social maladjustment, a grimy, scabby, anti-spectacular about being a “troll from under the bridge” with the worst roommate ever and finding out the only thing more irritating than calling and calling someone who won’t pick up the phone goddammit is when they actually do. Director Ronnie Bronstein calls FROWNLAND, “an overripe tomato lobbed with spazmo inaccuracy at the spotless surface of the silver screen and a mad valentine to the craggy tradition of unadulterated cheapo-independent expression.”

FROWNLAND will screen with EVERYTHING WILL BE OK, the latest short by mad genius and Cinematexas favorite Don Hertzfeldt, the man behind apocalyptically funny animations like BILLY'S BALLOON and the Academy Award Nominated REJECTED.

This screening is FREE to all, but seating is limited, so you must register through the AFS website.

The screening of FROWNLAND will be the final event of the Cinematexas Viking Funeral, to take place Dec 1st & 2nd. Join us as we say goodbye to Cinematexas, the pioneering film festival that shocked, inspired, pillaged and plundered the minds of Austinites from 1996-2007.

Saturday, Dec. 1st:

  • 4:30pm: RAGNA-ROCK. One of two compilations of new work by esteemed Cinematexas alumni like James Fotopoulos, Ben Coonley, Daniel Cockburn, Stephanie Gray, etc.)
  • 7pm: UT HOLLYWOOD SHOWCASE. A local screening of this year's best UT-produced student films, which screened at the DGA Theater in LA in September.
  • 9:15pm: ASSASSINS: A FILM CONCERNING RIMBAUD. An early experiment by Todd Haynes and an clear precursor to his new Dylan non-biopic I'M NOT THERE.

Sunday, Dec. 2nd:

  • 2pm: RAGNA-ROLL: More madness from Cinematexas chums.
  • 4:30pm: INTERKOSMOS. A delightfully tongue-in-cheek homage to a fictional East German space project, Jim Finn's INTERKOSMOS uses recreated newsreels combined with musical interludes to resurrect the '70s in all its Brezhnev-era glory.
  • 7pm: FROWNLAND and EVERYTHING WILL BE OK (at Alamo Ritz)

Except for the FROWNLAND screening at the Ritz, all events will take place at the 501 Studios Theater, aka "Valhalla," aka "The Hall of the Slain."

The 501 Studios Theater is located at the corner of Brushy St and E. 5th St, one block east of I-35.

All events are FREE. Viking helmets are encouraged but not required.

December 2, 2007, 7pm
