Spaces Between Realities: the Films of Michael Haneke
Continually fascinated by the ongoing social metamorphosis of European cities, Haneke examines some people who are more immediately connected than those of 71 FRAGMENTS. Jean leaves his father’s farm to stay with his brother and sister-in-law in Paris. Older brother Georges is away photographing horrors in Kosovo while his wife Anne is acting in a film of psychological terror and entrapment. In a crowded shopping area, Jean cruelly tosses his unfinished food into the lap of a Romanian beggar but is accosted by a young French-African who berates his poor conduct. A fight ensues with terrible consequences for participants, bystanders, and relatives. -- Chale Nafus, Director of Programming, Austin Film Society |
