What Makes Kinky Run?

|

Presented By David Hartstein

post-screening discussion moderated By Janet Pierson

WHAT MAKES KINKY RUN? chronicles, from beginning to end, singing Jewish cowboy Kinky Friedman’s independent gubernatorial campaign in Texas. The documentary covers the outspoken candidate, his obstacles in gaining a spot on the ballot, his campaign staff strategizing for an unprecedented four-way race, and grass roots volunteers canvassing the state to raise awareness and money for their unlikely, but incredibly sharp, candidate.

About the filmmaker:

David Hartstein
is an Austin based filmmaker who grew up just outside of New York City in the wilds of Long Island. After graduating from the University of Texas' MFA program, David became the editor of a 17-episode series for PBS, SPECIAL SESSION, which covered the Texas Legislature. His appearances on MTV’s "The Real World: Austin" as an editorial consultant have led to recognition from middle school students around the country. With work spanning both fiction and non-fiction David is also currently producing ST. NAOMI, a feature film by writer/director Paul Gordon and AMERICA'S PARKING LOT, a documentary chronicling the Dallas Cowboys Gate 6 Tailgaters.

About the Docs-in-Progress screening series:

Filmmakers screen their "rough cuts" (or "near-fine-cuts") for a filmmaker-member audience, and receive constructive comments and feedback. The meetings are moderated by experienced Austin film professionals. Participants will be expected to agree to confidentiality regarding the film and the comments received, as the films to be screened have not been finalized.
