Short Filmmakers Bridging the Gap to Features

Celebrated Austin filmmakers David and Nathan Zellner, Kat Candler, Kelly Williams and Clay Liford join us for a conversation about their short form successes, and how this translates to career opportunities as well as creative growth towards the making of feature films.

David and Nathan Zellner are Austin-based filmmaking siblings who have written, produced, directed and edited numerous films and music videos that have screened at festivals worldwide.  This includes five shorts (FLOTSAM/JETSAM, REDEMPTITUDE, AFTERMATH ON MEADOWLARK LANE, FIDDLESTIXX, and SASQUATCH BIRTH JOURNAL 2) which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival ('05-'11). In 2008 their feature GOLIATH, which also premiered at Sundance, went on to be distributed by IFC Films and aired on The Sundance Channel. They returned to Sundance in 2012 with their most recent feature KID-THING, followed by its international premiere at the 62nd Berlinale. Their work can be viewed at zellnerbros.com

Kat Candler's award winning films have screened at Sundance, Los Angeles Film Festival, San Francisco International Film Festival, Austin Film Festival, SXSW, Slamdance, Tribeca's Kid's Series, Houston Museum of Modern Art, Chicago International Children's Film Festival, The National Institutes of Health and on PBS. Her latest teen thriller screenplay LOVE ME produced by Dolphin Entertainment and Anchor Bay Films will be released fall of 2012. She's currently in development on two feature films, NIKKI IS A PUNK ROCKER and the feature version of HELLION. Candler is a film Lecturer at the University of Texas.

Clay Liford is a graduate of the University of Texas film program. He has written and directed three features to date, including the festival hits, WUSS (SxSW 2011, AFI 2011 Audience Award Winner) and EARTHLING (SxSW 2010). His comedy short, MY MOM SMOKES WEED, has played over thirty festivals, including the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. As a director of photography, Clay has shot twenty features, including the award winning films "St. Nick" (SxSW 2009) and "Gayby" (SxSW 2012).
