GOIN’ FOR BAROQUE:
KEN RUSSELL, PETER GREENAWAY, DEREK JARMAN

Oct 11 - Nov 15, 2011

Three bad boys blasted open the very, very proper forms of British cinema in the 1970s and 80s with color-drenched explosions of exuberance and excess. One was clearly a mad (or drugged) genius, another a rigorous intellectual, and the third gay during the early years of “the Plague.” Filling their cinematic canvases with drama, tension, grandeur, and abundant details, they went straight for the audience’s emotions and aesthetic pleasure, leaving the intellect to reflect upon the drama and meaning at a later time. --Chale Nafus, Director of Programming, Austin Film Society
