The CineMarfa film festival returns for an exciting second year! After great success in 2011, CineMarfa is establishing a national reputation as the only film festival of its kind, with innovative programming that emphasizes the intersection of film and visual art. Our unique film festival focuses on bringing artist-made, archival, and historical films that are rarely screened outside of the context of the gallery or museum to the pristine and beautiful setting of Marfa in far West Texas. CineMarfa 2012 will feature the work of dozens of talented and exciting filmmakers. Here are a few highlights: A tribute screening of abstract films by “absolute” filmmaker Jordan Belson, an exclusive cinematic performance by Harmony Korine in which the filmmaker presents his favorite outrageous YouTube clips, a program of rarely-screened documentaries about rural America by Harmony’s father, Sol Korine, Mark Flood’s art videos, a program of historic and rare avant-garde shorts curated by Thomas Beard of Light Industry, and a screening of the recently restored print of the verité masterpiece chronicling the alienation of American Indians living in downtown Los Angeles THE EXILES presented by filmmaker and scholar of Native American film Cedar Sherbert. This year will also feature a program of submitted documentaries and shorts, including some amazing films made by Marfa artists. Films will be screened in Marfa’s Crowley Theater, with additional screenings to be announced in the upcoming weeks. Please check www.cinemarfa.org for updates.CineMarfa is a Marfa-based effort, drawing from the diverse pool of artists, filmmakers, and film lovers who call the tiny West Texas town home.
