Good Peoples Austin Presents: HAUSU

Sun, 27 May, 2012 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

On the surface, Hausu is a fairly coherent story about a house that [spoiler alert!] kills schoolgirls, but the film is injected with so much hyperactive fuck all-ness that what actually happens on screen seems basically impossible to describe.

In 1975, Director Nobuhiko Obayashi, coming from a background of experimental films and television commercials, was asked by the head of TOHO studios to develop a script like Jaws. Obayashi bounced ideas back and forth with his 11 year old daughter and came back with a direct rip off of Spielberg's classic blockbuster: A young girl named Gorgeous ditches plans for a summer trip with her father and new stepmother and instead travels with 6 friends to her ailing aunt's home in the country. The Aunt and her cat seem nice enough at first but something is dreadfully wrong as the house begins to hurl all sorts of supernatural and nonsensical shit the girls' way, taking them down one by one.

With it's cannabalistic lampshades, blood spewing cat paintings, and endless barrage of non-CGI special effects, Hausu revels in its own absurdity, existing on a blurry line between childish playfulness and insanity. While the mind struggles to form a thesis as to what is happening on screen, the film sneaks up from behind and puts the thesis' balls in its mouth. Intensely baffling and truly unique, Hausu is a film that's not to be missed on the big screen!

At the screening, you'll have a chance to win an original film poster from horror god Ray Frenden. We can't give away the details just yet, but we'll have the silk-screened prints in hand the night of the show, and with a little luck, you might too.
