LIFEBOAT is a simple film with complex ideas. Taking place entire on, you guessed it, a lifeboat, the story revolves around several American and British civilians, from various social and professional backgrounds, who have survived the bombing of their ship by a German U-boat during WWII. Things start to get interesting as one of the Germans soldiers swims by the boat is reluctantly rescued by the group. The first of Hitchcock’s many films set in one location LIFEBOAT utilizes its lone setting by making the claustrophobic boat the catalyst that pit allies against each other as much as their European enemy. The affect of the overall production, from the story written by famous novelist and screenwriter John Steinbeck to the lack of a musical score to the great performances from all involved, makes you feel a little uneasy, a little uncomfortable, but totally engrossed. I’m sure that’s exactly how Hitchcock would want it.
