Classic 35mm Treasures from the Janus Films Archive
APRIL 16 - MAY 28, 2013
THE MARCHESA HALL & THEATRE (6226 Middle Fiskville Road, near Highland Mall)

Founded in 1956, Janus Films quickly became the standard bearer for introducing “foreign films” to American audiences. The works of European auteurs, such as Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, and François Truffaut,  and Japanese masters, such as Yasujirō Ozu and Akira Kurosawa, were distributed to American arthouses and helped define new cinematic styles and concerns of the 1960s. My generation of film-lover knew that “If it’s a Janus, it’s got to be good” – the same way that “Criterion Collection” signifies excellence in digital cinema today. Small wonder that the Criterion Collection was built on the Janus Films archives. In appreciation of that level of quality, we will open our additional screening space, The Marchesa Hall & Theatre, with selections from 35mm prints distributed by Janus Films. – Chale Nafus, Director of Programming
