13TH ANNUAL TEXAS FILM HALL OF FAME AWARDS
William broyles, jr.
Inducted by
Bill Wittliff
For a man who calls himself an "unemployed and occasionally homeless
Vietnam veteran" William Broyles, Jr. keeps very busy. Founder of the
award-winning Texas Monthly magazine, he was editor of California
magazine and went on to be editor-in-chief of Newsweek. Broyles is the
author of Brothers In Arms and the co-creator of the multiple
Emmy-winning TV series, China Beach. As co-screenwriter (with Al
Reinert) of 1995's APOLLO 13, Broyles was nominated for an Academy
Award and a Writer's Guild Award, winning Best Screenplay from the PEN
Center Literary Award for his efforts on the film. Co-writer of 1999's
surprise hit ENTRAPMENT, he wrote the original screenplay for CAST AWAY
with Tom Hanks in 2000, and shared writing credits for 2001's PLANET OF
THE APES and this year's UNFAITHFUL, starring Richard Gere and Diane
Lane.
Bill Wittliff
Wittliff has been a screenwriter and producer of films and television
since 1977, sometimes going on location but always based in Austin, one
of the first writers in the state to be able to achieve a successful
“off-site” career and an example to future filmmakers. In honor of his
accomplishments, he was awarded the Texas Medal of Arts in 2007.
