Screenings
In the fall of 1985, aspiring filmmakers Richard Linklater and Lee Daniel, along with a group of their friends, established the Austin Film Society to screen classic and contemporary movies they had never seen before. They asked Scott Dinger, original owner of the Dobie Theater, to let them show a midnight series of experimental films on one of the theater's two screens. Twenty years later, AFS once again partners with the Dobie Theater to bring exciting new cinema to movie lovers in Austin, Texas.
Avant Cinema
ScreeningsThe Austin Film Society is proud to present an ongoing series of short experimental, avant-garde films by regional filmmakers.
Essential Cinema
ScreeningsEssential Cinema is the Austin Film Society phrase that joins together films that exemplify the best of global cinema, the best by a particular director, the best of classic Hollywood and the best independent films.
