Screenings

Every year the Austin Film Society screens more than 100 film and video works. Most of these screenings are free to AFS members.

AFS Documentary Tour

The AFS Documentary Tour is our opportunity to bring the best in documentary filmmaking to the big screen.

Most screenings also feature a post-screening Q&A session with the filmmaker.

AFS@Dobie

In the fall of 1985, aspiring filmmakers Richard Linklater and Lee Daniel, along with a group of their friends, established the Austin Film Society to screen classic and contemporary movies they had never seen before. They asked Scott Dinger, original owner of the Dobie Theater, to let them show a midnight series of experimental films on one of the theater's two screens. Twenty years later, AFS once again partners with the Dobie Theater to bring exciting new cinema to movie lovers in Austin, Texas.

Avant Cinema

The Austin Film Society is proud to present an ongoing series of short experimental, avant-garde films by regional filmmakers.

Essential Cinema

Essential Cinema is the Austin Film Society phrase that joins together films that exemplify the best of global cinema, the best by a particular director, the best of classic Hollywood and the best independent films.

Premieres & Special Screenings

Every year AFS has the great pleasure of presenting premieres and special screenings. Past events have included premieres of films by Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino.

Quentin Tarantino Film Festival

Every so often Quentin Tarantino comes to Austin with a truckload of his favorite films and puts on a 10-day movie fest.
