Spirits by Sidekick

Well, the Spirit Awards Viewing Party didn't... go off exactly as planned this weekend. I had confirmed everything with Ringers a couple weeks ago, but I showed up at 3:30pm on Saturday only to discover that IFC can't be shown commercially in any business establishments. (Apparently this is new, since we did the viewing party there last year). I dashed around to other bars downtown, but they were either closed or didn't have more than basic cable.

About 25 or 30 folks showed up to watch the event and I tried to apologize to each of them. Ringers was nice enough to pick up the tab for food & drink for everyone, which convinced most to stick around. Fortunately, SXSW Film Festival producer Matt Dentler was under the tent in Santa Monica and text-ed in the winners to his fiancee Jarren, who was there with us with her Sidekick. So, we heard pretty much instantaneously when the Cassavetes Award went to Quinceanera and not one of our Austin boys. Oh well. I'm sure they had a blast regardless.

Next year, I will be sure to have a Plan B, C and D.
