ABOUT THE PROGRAM
For more than two decades, the Austin Film Society has served as the hub of Austin’s vibrant film community.
Summer @ Austin Studios offers a unique opportunity to work with local filmmakers and experience the magic of film and filmmaking. Whether it’s developing a script idea or producing an animation project, AFS programs provide a fun, nurturing space for exploration and collaboration. We have seen an amazing response to camps this summer and are currently SOLD OUT of all camps for ages 9-14. NEXT-GEN FILMMAKING for teenagers is still OPEN! Parents interested in other camps can sign up for the waitlist.

NEXT-GEN STORYTELLING (AGES 15-18)

Wes Anderson, Joss Whedon, Sofia Coppola, Spike Jones. These auteurs of our time all have great stories to tell. Join AFS this summer as we examine the work of these great directors and more for story, style and substance. Students will then take over the role of director and make their own short films inspired by these great filmmakers. Both advanced and beginner students are welcome, as we explore the technical and artist skills needed to craft a masterpiece. We'll also use different outlets for storytelling, including music video and animation, to help students find their voice.

INDIE FILMMAKING (MULTIPLE AGE RANGES)

| From script to screen, how does your vision become a reality? Indie filmmaking is all about using your resources to make the best movie possible. At this camp, students will learn the techniques and tricks of creating narrative film projects, including live-action and animation, as well as the spirit of independent filmmaking. Students will write and film their own stories, and share in the movie-making experience. A great introduction for those new to film or an excellent way for more experienced artists to hone their skills. |

SCARY FILMMAKING (AGES 12-15)

EEIIIHHH!! Like scary movies? Then learn what makes these movies tick, from universal themes all the way down to how suspenseful moments are created! Explore the fundamentals, going as far back as age-old folk tales, working forward to contemporary (age-appropriate) psychological thrillers. Participants will create their own short films, developing projects from idea all the way through final edit. This camp includes visual effects learning, select screenings, behind-the-scenes activities and a culminating screening… be very afraid!

ANIMATION CREATION (AGES 9-11)

Immerse yourself in the world of animation through activities that explore basic history, theory and practice of the art. Hands-on projects will cover the fundamentals of animation, utilizing such techniques as flipbooks, drawing/scratching on film, paper cutouts and claymation. Each camp will include a daily screening of a feature length animated classic, followed by fun activities and discussion. Then, direct your creative energies through short animations, picking favorite techniques for the final project!

SCI-FI / FANTASY FILMMAKING (AGES 12-15)

| Learn the techniques and movie magic behind some of your favorite sci-fi and fantasy films. From special effects to costumes and modeling, how do you create the look and feel of these genre films? Filmmaking camera and editing skills, as well as the creative writing process will be explored in this summer camp. Students will walk away with their own SUPER 8 experience! |
