THE SEPIA SCREEN

Video, 140 minutes

The Sepia Screen is an occasional series spotlighting “race” films from the “separate but unequal” chapter of America’s history. When movie theaters were segregated an entire market segment of very low-budget, black-cast films emerged. What makes them especially interesting, aside from the talent involved, is the way the depiction of black characters differs from their counterparts in “white” films. We are joined by series co-programmer Dshanya Reese for a double feature of these entertaining and interesting films.
