Riding the Wave: Romania's Latest And Finest

March 28 - April 18, 2014
AFS AT THE MARCHESA (6226 MIDDLE FISKVILLE ROAD)

At the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, the premiere of Cristian Mungiu's FOUR MONTHS, THREE WEEKS AND TWO DAYS set a global spotlight on Romania, where a new generation of directors, now equipped with the tools, education and political freedom to express themselves, were making up for decades of artistic repression by creating brilliant cinema.  The Romanian New Wave defined the latter half of the aughts by churning out about a dozen internationally acclaimed films both before and after Mungiu's tone-setting Palme D'Or, including Cristi Puiu's THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU; Radu Muntean's TUESDAY, AFTER CHRISTMAS; and Corneliu Porumboiu's 12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST and POLICE, ADJECTIVE.  The 2013 Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals gave rise to the next set of films by this distinguished group, who are only continuing to expand their scope and artistry.  In this series, we'll see both Mungiu and Porumboiu's latest films: BEYOND THE HILLS and WHEN EVENING FALLS ON BUCHAREST OR METABOLISM, as well as Calin Peter Netzer's CHILD'S POSE, which was written by the Romanian scribe behind FOUR MONTHS, LAZARESCU and several others.  Not only are these the best new films from Romania, they are some of the best films we have seen this year, period--don't miss them while they are in Austin.  This is also a great opportunity to visit your local video store and catch up on these directors splendid filmographies.  As an added bonus, we'll take a look back to the defining film of the wave, with a single screening of FOUR MONTHS, THREE WEEKS AND TWO DAYS, courtesy of Sundance Selects.  Noroc!
