Joining Sergio Sollima and Sergio Leone in the pantheon of remarkable spaghetti Sergios is the master, Sergio Corbucci. To dedicated fans and scholars of the Italian Western he is often considered the equal or better of Leone. Like Leone, he is a master of the frame and he makes films with real wit and an obsessive enthusiasm for the medium and genre. Unlike Leone, he is interested in his characters as more than chess pieces in a game of revenge. Corbucci's narratives are shaggier and have fewer clean lines. He invented gags and bits of business on set whereas Leone had a more architectural sensibility. THE MERCENARY, along with Corbucci's DJANGO, THE GREAT SILENCE, and COMPANEROS, is a truly great western, as well as a damn good time at the movies. Franco Nero stars as a Polish mercenary in the old west who first sells his services to a mining company and then to the army of peasants who claim the mine for themselves. Jack Palance enters the picture as the wild card, a flamboyantly gay, sadistic assassin on the trail of the Mexican revolutionary leader Tony Musante and the silver from the mine. Music by Ennio Morricone.
