The Spotlight on John Cassavetes series also includes A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE and THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE.
USA, 1970, 131 min.
John Cassavetes movies are about love, all kinds of love, the joy and beauty of it, the humor, the pain, the incompatibility of love with most of our lives. Cassavetes’ characters want to love and be loved, and that’s where the trouble usually starts. This three film series throws a spotlight on John Cassavetes, a name often invoked as the founding father of independent film, and a maker of movies that can still move us, shake us, and make us feel the love in our lives more acutely.
Cassavetes assembles his dream male ensemble: himself, Ben Gazzara, and Peter Falk to tell an admittedly rambling, uneven, funny, tragic, infuriating, uplifting, beautiful wreck of a film. Cassavetes, Gazzara and Falk play three middle-aged men, shaken by the death of their friend, who take a drunken trip to London to live out their mid-life crisis en masse, and at the top of their lungs. Cassavetes wrote the script specifically for his co-stars and the parts fit them like a glove. Funny, cruel, and desperate.
