Ten-year-old Zazie doesn’t really think much of adults, and after meeting the ones in her life, who can blame her? As seen through the eyes of the small girl from a French province, the interests, infatuations, and emotions of grown-ups seem rather ridiculous. Brought to Paris to stay with an uncle while her mother has three days of non-stop dalliance with her secret lover, Zazie mainly wants to see le metro. She arrives in the big city on a train, but the idea of travelling underneath the city is more exciting to her. Unfortunately for her, as was customary in the France of those days, there is a strike – this one involving the union of subway workers. Finally escaping the boring household of her uncle, Zazie sets out to explore Paris on her own. This odyssey of a big city experienced by a young girl is what makes Louis Malle’s film ZAZIE DANS LE METRO so charming to me. The humor, well, the humor is a different matter altogether, best judged by the individual viewer. -- Chale Nafus
