The Documentary 101 workshop will introduce students to the possibilities of non-fiction filmmaking and the role a director has in researching, developing, designing, and leading a documentary project from its inception to the final cut. The workshop will explore and analyze various types of documentaries as well as the ways a director can approach non-fiction subjects and topics. By understanding story, themes, and structure, we will explore different creative approaches to non-fiction films and the evolutionary process of documentary filmmaking. During the workshop, there will be a hands-on segment where participants will have the opportunity to plan and conduct an interview with a guest for a simulated documentary shoot.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Arturo Jiménez is a Mexican filmmaker and educator with over 15 years of professional experience in narrative and documentary films. His latest production, the documentary film SANGRE VIOLENTA/SANGRE VIOLETA, co-directed with Edna Diaz, won the Audience Award in the Texas Shorts category at SXSW 2024. He currently teaches at The University of Texas at Austin.
