Principles of Directing

This two-part workshop will introduce the core concepts and practical skills necessary to bring a director’s vision to life. Designed for aspiring filmmakers, this class focuses on developing a strong narrative vision and learning how to effectively communicate with actors. Participants will gain hands-on experience in breaking down a scene, conceptualizing characters, and working with an actor to bring a scene to fruition. No prior filmmaking experience is required — just a passion for storytelling and a commitment to attending both days of the workshop.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the director’s role and vision in filmmaking
  • Breaking down an original scene to identify themes and character arcs
  • Collaborating with a group to develop a cohesive narrative and scene structure
  • Directing actors: techniques for giving constructive feedback and establishing trust
  • Blocking and staging scenes for clarity and impact
  • Practical application: directing an actor through an original scene
