Join us at Austin Public for a Works-In-Progress screening of two narrative short films – Kayla Lane Freeman’s PLANT MOMS and Nicole Elmer’s BONE GUITAR – on June 11 at 6 PM. The films will be preceded by a mixer at 5:45 PM and followed by an audience feedback discussion moderated by filmmaker Lizette Barrera.

AFS’s Works-In-Progress series provides the growing and diverse filmmaking community of Austin peer-level critiques of rough or fine cuts of their work. BONE GUITAR
A young metalhead, with the help of the God of Carrion, makes an electric guitar of bones, all to cheer up his big brother after he is kicked out of his death metal band.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Nicole Elmer’s screenplays have received recognition and support through a variety of labs and contests. They have been: selected as a semifinalist for Slamdance in the horror category, in the top 31 entries out of over 4,000 scripts submitted (2019); selected for the Cine Qua Non Lab Script Revisions (2021) and Cine Qua Non Lab Story Lines (2021); selected in the Frontières/Fantasia Co-production Market (2020); selected in the NALIP Latino Media Market (2020); as a semifinalist in the Writers’ Lab (2022). LA FILLE (“DAUGHTER”), another short horror film of which she is the writer, is currently in the festival circuit.

A lonely woman is invited to a plant propagation party, only to discover that Plant Moms are more bizarre than she could have imagined.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Kayla Lane Freeman is an Austin filmmaker and comedienne by way of Chicago. She has a B.S. in Radio-TV-Film from UT Austin and has worked on set, in post-production, or as an impact producer for Sundance Channel, Kartemquin Films, Texas Freedom Network, and for Austin and Chicago indie filmmakers. Kayla’s short film directorial debut, THE NDE, was an official selection for the Austin Lift-Off Film Festival, Dark Comedy Film Festival, Lysistrata Comedy Festival, and the ATX Short Film Showcase, where it was also screened as part of the 2023 “Best of the Year” comedy program. You can also find her onstage weekly performing comedy at Fallout Theater in downtown Austin.
