SUMMER FREE FOR ALL

A Big Kinky Epic from the master of the form. Cecil B. Demille largely created the prototype for what we think of as a motion picture director. Low-brow, obsessed with colossal spectacle, and a technical master, he was a little like the Michael Bay of his time. Contemporary audiences thought of his movies as safe, family friendly adaptations of classical and biblical subjects but in hindsight they are wild, decadent, and remarkably sexual. Fans of the pre-code Hollywood cinema will be delighted by his CLEOPATRA, which stars the luminous Claudette Colbert, clad in a stunning procession of skimpy outfits, as the Queen of Egypt, who sleeps her way to the top and, you know the rest. Jam-packed with setpieces that would cost hundreds of millions of dollars today if anyone had the audacity to try. Much, much more fun that the Burton/Taylor version of several decades later. This is a howl. A gorgeous howl.
