Internship & Film Referral Program

The AFS Internship & Film Referral Program is a great way to immerse yourself in the local film community, while gaining valuable work experience. Our primary goals are to educate participants about the film and arts industries and to facilitate job placement in the field. Structure of AFS Internship Program:

  • Everyone begins as an OFFICE INTERN working across departments

  • Office interns are able to become SENIOR INTERNS, gaining in-depth experience with a particular AFS department

  • All internship tracks include participation in the FILM REFERRAL PROGRAM. All positions are unpaid.

  • All AFS internships are unpaid and are not production internships.
Now accepting applications for FALL 2017
Deadline is TUESDAY AUGUST 1, 2017 @ 11:59 PM.

Please read the Application instructions, applicant requirements and internship description below before completing the application.

Participants learn about the inner workings of the film industry and gain exposure to the local film community. Interns master basic office skills, workplace etiquette and event management. All participate in a minimum of three professional development workshops; create a personal video project and contribute to AFS' various events. Interns receive informal feedback throughout their tenure, as well as a formal evaluation at the mid-point of the semester.

Office Interns contribute 15 hours per week, divided between:

  • Two office shifts at the Main Office at Austin Studios, one from 9AM-2PM, one from 2PM-7PM

  • One 2-hour office shift at Austin Public, times vary
  • Assisting with AFS programs, including staffing AFS screenings and Austin Public events

During their first semester, interns take part in three professional development workshops, and create a short video about yourself.

After a semester, office interns are invited to intern in a specific department, where they work directly with staff to enact AFS programs.  Departments include: Exhibition, Programming, Artist Services, Education, Austin Studios, Development, Marketing and Graphic Design.

Senior interns are expected to work 15 hours per week.

Depending on need, senior internships with Development, Marketing and Graphic Design may become available for immediate entry. (Read more about duties for each of these positions.) When completing your application for the upcoming semester, you can indicate if you would like to be considered for one of these openings.

Film Referral Program

All Interns that successfully complete a semester at AFS are eligible for our Film Referral Program (FRP), through which we help our intern alumni find job opportunities. To date, we've facilitated over 600 FRP placements in part and full-time positions. Participants are placed on a “referral list” in our database and are recommended to production companies when positions become available. Only alumni of the internship program are eligible for participation in the FRP.
