The film takes place in a large estate adjoining an exterior wall of the Auschwitz death camp. As horrific screams and gunshots echo faintly across the wall of the camp, the commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel), and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), strive to build an ideal Nazi dream life for their family. As the smoke from burning bodies wafts through their expansive garden, the family and their visitors attempt to go on as if nothing is happening.
