The new doc WALKING ON WATER follows internationally renowned artist Christo on his quest to realize “The Floating Piers”, originally conceived in 1970 by Christo and his late wife and collaborator, Jeanne-Claude.
In 2016, seven years after Jeanne-Claude’s death, this stunning, site-specific masterpiece was finally cleared to be mounted on Italy’s Lake Iseo, which lies at the foot of the Alps. But securing a location proved to be only the first step in a tumultuous process of creative problem solving and prickly negotiations. Making the situation all the more fraught, Christo’s intensity level – already turned up to the max during the initial planning stages – only climbs higher as the challenges mount.
An illuminating portrait of a master artist and the arduous business of bringing an ambitious work to life, WALKING ON WATER gives us a rare and entertaining look into the business of large-scale art production – and the difficulties faced by the visionary at the heart of it all.
“Rollicking… Christo strikes a fascinating figure, a tireless, uncompromising artist who thinks his work is, on the one hand, totally useless, but shows childlike joy when things finally work out.” – Mark Peranson, Cinema Scope
“The artist’s forceful character does battle with technology, bureaucracy, corruption and the elements, resulting in an installation of stunning beauty and a documentary that delights in capturing the act of creation.” – Jay Weissberg, Variety
“Watching the eccentric luddite Christo bringing the installation to life is like watching a magician perform a drawn-out magic trick.” – Bedatri D. Choudhoury, Hyperallergenic
