The Spotlight on John Cassavetes series also includes A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE and HUSBANDS.

USA, 1976, 135 min.

John Cassavetes movies are about love, all kinds of love, the joy and beauty of it, the humor, the pain, the incompatibility of love with most of our lives. Cassavetes’ characters want to love and be loved, and that’s where the trouble usually starts. This three film series throws a spotlight on John Cassavetes, a name often invoked as the founding father of independent film, and a maker of movies that can still move us, shake us, and make us feel the love in our lives more acutely.

Ben Gazzara plays an uncommonly humane strip club impresario who runs up a large gambling debt and is faced with a dilemma which tests his adherence to his life’s code of loyalty and love. Gazarra is tough as nails on the outside, but his eyes are a window to his inner world of compassion. Much of the film takes place on stage at his club as we see Gazzara taking stock of his life and his choices amongst the backdrop of a sometimes sleazy and sometimes beautiful fantasy world.
