AFS History Of Television: Masters & Methods: Aaron Spelling Part 5: HART TO HART & HOTEL

History of Television

There are no current or future screenings planned for this film.

The latest installment of the AFS History Of Television series about the work of Texas-born super-producer Aaron Spelling airs on Monday May 23 at 7pm Central Time. Author, podcaster and classic television expert Amanda Reyes will join AFS Lead Programmer Lars Nilsen in providing episode introductions and interstitial commentary about Spelling, his collaborators and the television production environment at the time these were made.

This month we will cover the romantic mystery show “Hart To Hart”, starring Stefanie Powers and Robert Wagner as a suave and very affectionate married couple who delight in solving murders, which are, fortunately for the viewer, never in short supply. Light-hearted, breezy, and a bit tongue-in-cheek, this show exemplifies Spelling’s love of glamor and escapism.

Then we will move to Aaron Spelling’s final anthology drama, the soapy “Hotel,” which follows the human interest stories that swirl around a busy San Francisco luxury hotel. This is, in the classic Spelling manner, a guest-star-laden melodrama omnibus show, with several interwoven stories a la “Fantasy Island” and “The Love Boat” with a greater emphasis on drama and often controversial subjects befitting its late time slot.
