About AFS Creative Careers

Program Pathways

A six-month stipend-paid internship and training program for 18-24-year-olds who want to pursue media production careers as an alternative to or in conjunction with a college degree. The internship pathway provides 15 hours a week of technical training, professional development, and hands-on internship experience at all three of AFS’ facilities: Austin Public, Austin Studios, and AFS Cinema.  After completing the program, interns will receive job placement support.

A three-month stipend-paid program followed by on-the-job opportunities to shadow professionals, work with mentors, and receive production assistant training. This pathway provides trainees who are 18 and older with audio & video production and digital media instruction, professional development, and technical skill enhancement. The participants will train a minimum of 8 hours per week before receiving job placement support.

AFS offers production and professional development courses beyond equipment certification to support Austinites who are 18 and older. Professionals who are looking to expand their production skills towards career advancement are encouraged to apply for this free development pathway.

AUSTIN FILM SOCIETY

OUR STORY

Founded in 1985 by filmmaker Richard Linklater, AFS creates life-changing opportunities for filmmakers, catalyzes Austin and Texas as a creative hub, and brings the community together around great film. AFS supports filmmakers towards career leaps, encouraging exceptional artistic projects with grants and support services. AFS operates Austin Studios, a 20-acre production facility, to attract and grow the creative media ecosystem. Austin Public, a space for our city’s diverse media makers to train and collaborate, provides many points of access to filmmaking and film careers. The AFS Cinema is an ambitiously programmed repertory and first run arthouse with broad community engagement. By hosting premieres, local and international industry events, and the Texas Film Awards, AFS shines the national spotlight on Texas filmmakers while connecting Austin and Texas to the wider film community. AFS is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

VISION

We envision a culture in which art and industry work together to feed innovation, creativity, and economic opportunity; in order to build a more equitable, artistic and prosperous world.

This culture centers imagination, artistry and the infinite possibilities of human experience in the moving image, and supports the realization of cinema as an unparalleled form of expression and medium for exchange.

In this culture, equitable practices address historic and systemic injustice, and everyone can access great art, self-expression, careers and advancement in moving image media.
