Fresh from its triumphant premiere on the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival – and a five minute standing ovation – this is the latest film from oddly contoured mind of Leos Carax (HOLY MOTORS, LOVERS ON THE BRIDGE). Written by Ron and Russel Mael of Sparks as a filmed opera, it begins with the romance between a famous opera diva (Marion Cotillard) and a slovenly stand-up comic (Adam Driver) and follows their lives and the destiny of their titlular infant daughter Annette through the storms of fate. As unusual and visually striking as could be imagined, it is a work of cinema as unique as its creators. This is definitely a film that should be seen on a large screen and with the best possible sound system – and we’re happy to say that the AFS Cinema is equipped with both.
