Jacques Tourneur directs this moody and atmospheric classic that, among other things, pioneered jump scares in horror films. Simone Simon stars as a woman with a strange affliction that makes her especially dangerous to her male partners. This does tend to mess up her love life. Highly literate and elegantly executed. In 35mm.

Limited edition CAT PEOPLE screenprints by Sara Deck will be available for purchase at these screenings.

Sara Deck: “CAT PEOPLE is the first, and in my opinion the best, of Val Lewton’s horror films for RKO. It is chock-full of cinematic suspense, sexual tension, and is perhaps best known for the “Lewton Bus” jump scare scene, which has been studied and copied ever since. Personally, I think the brightest highlight of the movie is Simone Simon in her vulnerable portrayal of Irena. For this piece, I wanted to bring together two of my favourite elements — the unknown terror in the shadows and Irena’s conflicted character.”
