Director Ciro Guerra used diaries of actual Amazon expeditions to inform his film, which depicts an intersection of Western ways and the traditions of the residents of the Amazon rain forests. A major narrative thread in the film involves the use of entheogens, sometimes known as psychedelic plant compounds. The January 25 screening will be followed by a Skype discussion with Jeffrey Guss, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, NYU School of Medicine.
