Women of KOOP

There are no current or future screenings planned for this film.

Join us for a special screening of the 1990s fictional musical biopic GRACE OF MY HEART, presented by the Women of KOOP in a second collaboration with AFS following the success of Valley Girl in May. Before the show, there will be a special edition of Crate Diggers’ Gold broadcast live from lobby, followed by an “oldies” DJ set by the Women of KOOP.  Following the screening, we will be joined by writer/director Allison Anders for a Skype Q&A!

While still a film school student, Allison Anders wanted to make a movie about girl group The Shangri-Las, but the scope was too ambitious. Fast-forward to the 1990s, when her idea piqued the interest of one Martin Scorsese, eventual executive producer of the film…

This poignant feminist dramedy chronicles the career of Denise Waverly, played by Illeana Douglas and based on the life of Carole King, following her growth from Brill Building songwriting partner to solo singer-songwriter sensation. The soundtrack pairs songwriters of the late 1950s-to-early 1970s era with modern-day performers for memorable original songs that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the classics. Written and directed by Allison Anders, this is a woman’s story from a woman’s perspective. It has one foot in the 50s–70s and one foot in the mid-90s in all of the best ways, featuring Cynthia Rowley’s designs for the radiant Illeana Douglas, John Turturro as Timothy Carey as the good-hearted record executive, Eric Stoltz as the timeless dirtbag, and Matt Dillon as not-even-thinly veiled Brian Wilson. Charming, hilarious, and criminally underseen.
