“Emotionally and psychologically intimate”
Mubi

“A fascinating, towering confection of contradictions: a modest epic. …I suspect we’ll be talking about this one for some time to come—and not because of its length.”
Film Comment

“Hamaguchi is a genius of scene construction, turning the fierce poetry of painfully revealing and pugnaciously wounding dialogue into powerful drama that’s sustained by a seemingly spontaneous yet analytically precise visual architecture.”
The New Yorker

Now that his DRIVE MY CAR has brought Ryusuke Hamaguchi to the attention of serious moviegoers around the world, it seems like it might be about time to revisit his Magnum Opus, a five-plus hour film that again treads the line between the meaningful and the mundane as we observe four women in their thirties as they take a long look at their lives and relationships.

This screening will include two 10-minute intermissions.
