Paul Newman's West presented by Ethan Hawke

There are no current or future screenings planned for this film.

Ethan Hawke will join us live for an introduction and post-screening discussion with filmmaker, curator and Director of Sundance’s Indigenous Program, Adam Piron (Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma and Mohawk).

Paul Newman and director Martin Ritt made three revisionist Westerns together over the course of four years. This is the last of them and, in many ways, the most ripe for re-evaluation. Newman plays a white man raised by Native Americans whose perspective is appreciably different from the settlers he comes into contact with. This conflict comes to a head when he finds himself in the middle of stagecoach robbery. A psychologically and sociologically fraught story that nonetheless also manages to be an exciting action film. Adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel.
