The most conventional way to measure a coach’s success is, of course, his record. When the late, much loved Augie Garrido retired as the coach of the Texas Longhorns baseball team in 2016, it was as the winningest major college baseball coach in history, a record that stands today. But Augie’s story is much richer than his record of victories can begin to convey. He was an educator, a mentor, and a very wise man who loved what he did and the people with whom he shared the diamond.

As we remember Augie’s life and work, we are so fortunate that we have this film, made by his friend and admirer Richard Linklater. It takes us into Garrido’s methods as a coach, as a motivator and as a teacher, as we observe, with unprecedented access, his team meetings, practices, and conversations with players during games. No one has a better perspective on Garrido than the man himself, and his self-reflection provides some of the most interesting moments of the documentary. You don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this film, you will find yourself fascinated by this remarkable man and his insights.
