Author & Film Event

There are no current or future screenings planned for this film.

The rebellious hippie auteur Hal Ashby became one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers of the 1970s with films such as BEING THERE and HAROLD AND MAUDE influencing an entire generation of filmmakers. His films often feature outsiders, drop outs and rebels, characters who don’t buy what mainstream society is selling. His first feature as a director, THE LANDLORD, is a psychadelic comedy and a biting criticism in which the incompetent son of a wealthy family of east coast WASPS decides to buy up property in the heart of African-American Brooklyn. While THE LANDLORD is satire writ large, 40+ years later, this film is still as relevant as it was upon it’s release. The film will be introduced by Brandon Harris, filmmaker and film critic, who has just released his first book, a memoir about race, gentrification and film criticism called “Making Rent in Bed-Stuy”. Brandon will sign books in the lobby before the film.
