Crane operator Samir (Samir Guesmi, DISTRICT 13) runs into young widow Agathe (Florence Loiret Caille, TROUBLE EVERY DAY) at a café in suburban Paris. She’s clearly uninterested in a relationship, but Samir is hopelessly smitten and signs up for lessons at the public pool where Agathe works as a lifeguard and swimming instructor. His romantic pursuit soon takes him to a lifeguards’ convention in Iceland, where he poses as an Israeli delegate (with a plan to use swimming pools for peace in the Middle East) and contends with a string of new complications. This final film by Sólveig Anspach (QUEEN OF MONTREUIL) is a quirky but sincere romcom about the extremes—geographic and otherwise—that some will go for true love.

L’EFFET AQUATIQUE won the 2017 César Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Director’s Fortnight at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
