Visconti, for all his showmanship, is at heart a deeply humanistic filmmaker.  His works are living things and are meant for those who choose to embrace everything life has to offer.  In ROCCO AND HIS BROTHERS, Visconti depicts the twin parallels of existence in the characters of brothers Rocco (Alain Delon) and Simone (Renato Salvatori).  The affability and sweetness inherent in Rocco is offset by the cold, tortured soul of Simone as they, along with their three other brothers, immigrate from rural Lucania and attempt to start a new life in Milan.  Temperamentally romantic and mercurial, the film offers such a vast world-weary panorama that one swaggers away from the experience supremely self-assured that they have uncovered the secret of life. A stunning masterpiece.  (Davis Rivera)

ABOUT THIS SERIES

Born into a prominent family of Milanese aristocrats, Luchino Visconti had a rare perspective on social class and familial tradition that informs his work. His films, small at first, grew to operatic proportions as his career went on, with a thematic grandeur to equal their visual opulence. We are honored to present several new restorations of his films as part of this touring series.
