With John Pierson, Janet Pierson, Kyle Henry, Elisabeth Sikes, Bob Ray, Bill Daniel and Barry Tubb

John Pierson, indie film pioneer and author (SPIKE, MIKE, SLACKERS AND DYKES) hosts an anthology program of highlights from his magazine format cable tv series celebrating the art, heart and enterprise of independent film, which ran from 1997-2001 and had been completely unavailable until now. It is currently in re-release streaming on the Criterion Channel on FilmStruck.

Split Screen’s creator John Pierson and co-creator and occasional director Janet Pierson (now Director of SXSW Film) will be joined by a wonderful array of Texas filmmakers including Kyle Henry, Elisabeth Sikes, Bob Ray, Bill Daniel and Barry Tubb.

Kyle Henry, Elisabeth Sikes and Bob Ray were featured in an all-Austin Spring 1998 episode of Split Screen, in which John parks the show’s trusty RV (“Your wild ride through the indie film world”) outside the Austin Convention Center during SXSW to meet with and show the wares of local filmmakers. The three filmmakers will revisit the episode and discuss it, nearly 20 years after it’s making.

Bill Daniel will discuss “Selective Service System Story,” his fascinating investigation into the unforgettably disturbing short film “SSS” made during the Vietnam draft and frequently revived two decades later by AFS.

Our favorite cowboy turned actor Barry Tubb (TOP GUN, “Lonesome Dove”) will bring his producer-roping lariat and discuss “Lonesome Blood Trail” in which the ex-rodeo rider tours the Split Screen crew around his ranch in Snyder, Texas

Janet Pierson will screen and discuss her “Big Miss Movieola” segment on Miranda July, shot in 1999 at July’s home in Portland, Oregon long before July made her first feature.

John Pierson’s Split Screen explored the far-reaching pockets of movie madness around the country, featuring some of the most iconic filmmakers and many very colorful, if less successful, personalities. This special Texas Edition Split Screen event will bring back memories of independent film days gone by, as well as bring out some untold stories.
