THE PROPOSAL

Directed by Jill Magid

USA, 2018, 1h 26min, DCP

Doc Nights

There are no current or future screenings planned for this film.

In partnership with the Austin Creative Alliance, arrive early on Saturday, September 21 for a special interactive pre-show that, like the movie, explores the boundaries of art and the role each of us can play in it with members of the local improv and theater community. Members of Latinos in Architecture, part of the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, will also be on hand to answer questions about architect Luis Barragan, subject of the film.

When the great architect Luis Barragán died in 1988, his papers and other work were hidden away from the public in a Swiss vault. Many years later, the provocative artist and filmmaker Jill Magid engages in a “high wire act” of a struggle to democratize access to his art. In the process her action becomes a work of art in itself. This suspenseful and thought-provoking film documents her actions and their consequences.

REVIEWS

“Captivatingly wily. THE PROPOSAL meditates on the meaning of artistic legacy. Most of all, it shines an ingeniously media-savvy spotlight on Barragán’s work.” — Jeannette Catsoulis, The New York Times

“A multi-layered and thought-provoking work of art.”Allan Hunter, Screen International
