Join us at Austin Public for a Works-In-Progress screening of two narrative short films – Emery Jones’ PEREGRINE and Matthew Alaniz’ A HOUSE ON THE HILL – on April 21 at 6 PM. The films will be preceded by a mixer at 5:45 PM and followed by an audience feedback discussion moderated by filmmaker Lizette Barrera.

AFS’s Works-In-Progress series provides the growing and diverse filmmaking community of Austin peer-level critiques of rough or fine cuts of their work. Screenings are free for AFS MAKE members and above ($5 for WATCH members and non-members) and are followed by moderated audience feedback sessions. PEREGRINE

Prudence, a dancer who was recently rejected by her dream dance school, decides to go on a trip with her sister, Mia, to retreat from the pain.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Emery is a nonbinary Texas filmmaker with a key interest in animation, symbolism, and nonbinary/queer representation. They’ve written and directed seven narrative short films. Emery received Austin Film Society’s Harrison McClure Endowment Fund for their fourth film, HALFWAY TO HEAVEN. They graduated in December 2024 with an undergraduate degree in the Texas State University film program and most recently graduated from the AFS Creative Careers program.

A HOUSE ON THE HILL

As Matt prepares for his bachelor party, a brutal force slowly terrorizes him at a house on a hill that does not accommodate his disability.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Matthew S. Alaniz is an award-winning screenwriter working in Austin, Texas. Before his endeavors in filmmaking, Alaniz was an architectural designer in Houston, but his passion for storytelling led him to attend film school. In 2013, he received a Bachelor of Science in Film and immediately began his writing career. As a Latino with a physical disability, he strives to tell stories that convey a broader, more complex human narrative. Matthew has also served as a judge, juror, and script reader for film festivals and competitions in Texas and California, including his role as a long-time juror for the Superfest Disability Film Festival. He serves on the Advisory Committee of the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability, which studies and showcases disabled people’s experiences to revolutionize social views.
