“Pure cinematic poetry … poses a quietly radical challenge to assumptions about race, class, and the aesthetics of filmmaking.”
—The New York Times

“It’s not every day that you witness a new cinematic language being born … HALE COUNTY traverses years, encompasses tragedy and beauty, all in just 76 minutes.”
—The Village Voice

“HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING is a major work, and a richly rewarding one … the sort of film for which the word ‘lyrical’ was invented.”
—Vox

Join us for a post-screening Q&A with director RaMell Ross.

In his debut feature, RaMell Ross traces the lives of two young Black men over five pivotal years, offering an intimate and poetic glimpse into rural Alabama. In HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING, Ross challenges conventional portrayals of Black life and reflects on race, identity, and the fabric of the American South — finding meaning in the everyday and blending the ordinary with the profound. A film made up of moments, big and small.

Presented in collaboration with John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
