One of Agnès Varda’s most distinct works is this sensitive musical, released just two years after after the successful movement for abortion rights in France. Pomme and Suzanne are on wildly different paths– Pomme is a bohemian musician, Suzanne a struggling mother who is desperate to obtain an abortion for a third child she can’t afford. Pomme helps Suzanne out of her bind, and the two start a life-long friendship. Agnès Varda’s films are striking in their feminism because they illustrate the depth and richness of the inner lives of women, which is the magic of ONE SINGS, THE OTHER DOESN’T. In choosing to make this film a musical, Varda enhances her focus on the hopes and dreams of her fascinating and unusual protagonists.
